Harmony Academy

Harmony Academy

Harmony Academy was jointly initiated by Professor Zhu Jiangang of the Department of Sociology at Zhejiang University and the Guangzhou Academy of Philanthropy. It is a “parallel university” that uses collective learning in the academy tradition and action research to provide young people with a learning space where they can understand society and cultivate a public spirit through engagement with real-world contexts. It has previously completed two cohorts of youth experimental programs in Cangdong, Jiangmen, and Haiyuan, Ningxia. This funding will support two international camps in 2026. In August, a 14-day ethnographic field camp will be held in Chiang Mai, with anthropologists from China and abroad serving as mentors. Participants will carry out action research in real community settings and produce research reports. In July, an action research camp will be held at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin, hosted by Professor Xiang Biao, focusing on “Youth, Migration, and Social Imagination.”

Wamotopia 2026

Wamotopia 2026

Wamotopia took place in Chiang Mai from January 21 to February 4, 2026. It was the fourth edition and the largest so far. The event was made up of multiple independent camps, bringing together participants from more than twenty communities including 706 Youth Space, P2P Foundation, Nomad Summit, and Korean artist collectives, with total attendance exceeding 1,000. Rural development scholar Wen Tiejun was also among the participants. GCC's connection with Wamotopia began with the second edition, when GCC also supported the 2024 Chiang Mai gathering. This time, in addition to being a co-funder, GCC's Chinese Cypherpunks x Thinkers Gathering in Chiang Mai was also held within the Wamotopia framework. Wamotopia has been testing a simple question: can a fully decentralized, self-organized event with no single organizer genuinely bring together dispersed Chinese-speaking communities, Chiang Mai's local networks, and international participants? After four editions, the answer is still yes.
