R2CN Open Source Internship Platform
R2CN, known in Chinese as "Xiangkailed", is an open-source internship platform for global open-source projects and Chinese-speaking student developers. It runs on a task-based, capability-portfolio model built around GitHub, using the r2cn-bot to automate task assignment, progress tracking, and code review — connecting international open-source projects that need Chinese-speaking contributors with university students who want real open-source experience. The platform is not a concept: it has run within the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Software ecosystem for 16 months, building roughly 300 student capability portfolios, covering about 10 projects, and completing 211 tasks, and it is now spinning out of that ecosystem to become an independent, market-oriented public platform. Its core team brings together serial entrepreneur Lucy Chen, KAIYUANSHE chair Lin Lüqiang, and container technology pioneer Ma Quanyi, working alongside Chinese-language open-source communities including KAIYUANSHE and D4AI. GCC's grant will fund the engineering costs of the spin-out, scaling project onboarding in AI open-source infrastructure, campus outreach, and participation in Linux Foundation events together with joint activities with GCC. The platform has also committed to crediting GCC as a supporter on its website, GitHub organization page, and all cohort recruitment pages.
